Getting your Amateur Radio Licence....
Because of the possibility of interference to
other users of radio spectrum, the Government of Canada requires that
anyone who wants to use amateur radio equipment must pass an
examination and be licenced. The Lakehead Amateur Radio Club provides a
class every year for those that do not wish to study on their own, and
has volunteer examiners that can administer the exams on the
government's behalf in an informal setting. The pass mark for the
basic exam is 60% and there is no code exam for the basic licence which
allows you to:
- use amateur frequencies above 30 megahertz
- use handi-talkie type and mobile radios and the club sponsored repeaters
- talk world wide using Internet Radio Linking Project
- use amateur satellites
- talk across North America on the 6 meter band
If
you want to build transmitters, sponsor repeaters and club or school
stations, and use up to 1000 watts of power, you must pass the advanced
exam which is only 50 technical questions. All exams are multiple
choice type and are graded immediately. The Government of Canada no
longer charges for exams or licences and licences are issued for life.
