| CONQUER THE DOG RELAY The
Community of Kaministiquia, Ont., in 1999, decided to organize a sporting
event in which all the members of the community could participate. The
event would consist of a canoe race on the Dog River, a bike race and a
run, with different distances for kids 5 - 8, 9 - 14, 14 - 16, and adult
races. To provide safety for the participants, the Lakehead Amateur Radio
Club was asked to volunteer assistance in providing safety communications
for this event. Six to eight operators are required for this event which
has now been held for five consecutive years. It has now grown in size,
especially the adult event, which is starting to attract some of the more
elite athletes in the area. The event has been blessed with good weather
each year, and other than a few boating spills on the river, there have
been no injuries to the participants. The event is followed up with
volunteers and participants being treated to a lovely lunch, and prizes
being presented to the winners in the various categories.
